Day 3: January 2nd, 2006
Surviving the Parade
The wind and rain were surreal. The crowd was still very energetic but everything and everyone
was soaked. We meandered our way back along the parade route, stopping at times to see if anything
good was coming up the way. Finally the rain and wind were too much and we turned up the street
back towards the Metro station.
Jimmy and the USC fan crushed together on the bus
We waited a while for the train to pick us up, but it wasn't that crowded. We were at a station towards
the end of the parade route and we left early, so we felt good about beating the crowds. However,
as soon as we sat down, a voice came on over the intercom saying that the train was only going one stop
at which point we'd have to load into busses to take us several stops down the line. Apparently
there was a power outage at the main stations serving the parade route.
The train dumped us off at the Lake station and we all dutifully trudged up to street level to
catch the shuttle. It was a madhouse... people everywhere and just one bus at a time. We
were lucky to be towards the front of the masses, so we got on the first bus that came by. But
the fun was not over yet... people were pushing and pushing to get on the bus and get out of
the rain. Jonn was towards the middle of the bus but Jimmy was at the front... and each time
the bus driver would say "that's enough!" more people would push in. Eventually we all got
very close with each other.
As the bus lumbered on its way to the Mission station, Jimmy began conversing with the woman standing
next to him and her very cute son. Due to the close quarters on the bus, Jimmy was pressed right up
against the guy... and as luck would have it, he was wearing a USC cap! We all got a good laugh out
of that one.
Jonn sleeping on the ride back sitting next to the two girls from Wisconsin
The bus finally made it to the Mission station, so we got off and boarded the train headed back to
the hotel. We sat next to these two girls from Wisconsin who were planning on driving back home the
following day, with a detour through Vegas, of course. Jonn was so exhausted from the day that he
slept most of the trip back.
We made it back to the hotel and changed out of our sopping wet clothes. We had planned on going to
Disneyland again to see the Longhorn Band march through the park, but we really needed a break. We
would have had to leave as soon as we got back and then worry about traffic to and from the park. So
we just hung out in the hotel and in the really cool cafe downstairs.
